Any vein has the potential to become a fine spider vein or a lumpy varicose vein. Your veins are working against gravity to return blood to the heart. The muscles in your legs function as pumps, helping the narrow, elastic walls of the veins transport blood to the heart, where the arteries then carry the blood to your body’s tissues. As you get older, the valves that regulate blood flow weaken. This allows some blood to flow back into your veins, where it collects and causes web-like or bulging veins. While usually harmless, these veins can be unsightly. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive and highly effective way to fade spider veins and smaller varicose veins gradually.Â
Sclerotherapy involves applying a special solution into the problematic veins with a fine needle. This solution (“sclerosing agent”) causes the lining of each vein to swell. It also closes off the malfunctioning valves that allow the blood to leak back into your veins. In doing so, this procedure reroutes the blood through healthy veins and encourages proper blood flow – no pooling. The damaged vein becomes scar tissue and disappears naturally over time.
Timing can be an important consideration. It can take several weeks for veins to fade. The bigger the vein, the longer this process takes. Additionally, for most people, sclerotherapy is not a “one-and-done” treatment. You may need anywhere from 2 to 6 treatments to achieve your “goal” results, and there is a waiting period between repeat treatment sessions. Winter can be a great time to treat your legs, because by the time you exchange your heavy winter boots and pants for shorts and dresses, your veins will have faded. Scheduling treatments well before summer not only gives your legs time to heal but also helps to minimize complications.Â
As your legs heal, it is important to avoid direct sunlight, strenuous activity, and excessive heat. These behaviors can increase the risk of discoloration, swelling, and inflammation after treatment. By undergoing sclerotherapy during the colder, darker months when people tend to be less physically active, it may be easier to avoid undesirable effects or prolonged healing. Recovery is also more comfortable during the cooler months, because it is easier to hide post-treatment bruising under warmer winter clothes. Heavier compression garments are also far more comfortable to wear during the cooler months of the year.Â
